As Atalanta BC prepares for a significant Europa League quarter-final match, their manager Gian Piero Gasperini has addressed the swirling rumors linking him to the managerial position at Liverpool.
This speculation comes ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s anticipated departure from the Premier League giants.
During a press conference on the eve of their critical second leg against Liverpool, Gasperini expressed his pleasure at being considered a potential candidate to replace Klopp. Despite his career largely being rooted in Italy, the recent success against Liverpool at Anfield, where his team secured a commanding 3-0 victory, has catapulted his name into discussions for top managerial roles across Europe.

Gasperini, who has been at the helm of Atalanta since 2016, emphasized his commitment to the Italian club, especially as they stand on the cusp of reaching their first European semi-final. He stated, “Of course, I am happy with links to the Liverpool job to replace Klopp, but my focus is on the game. We can’t be distracted by these kinds of links or stories; we have to focus on the upcoming games.”
The veteran manager highlighted the significance of the upcoming match at the Gewiss Stadium, acknowledging the impact of playing such a crucial game in front of their home fans. He remarked on the historical importance of the match and the need to maintain concentration, noting, “We are happy to play a match of good quality in front of our fans… We know that it will be one of the most important matches in history, if not the most important.”
While Gasperini’s links to Liverpool are flattering, the reality of him taking over at Anfield remains uncertain. Despite Atalanta’s strong attacking record in Serie A, where they rank third in goals scored, he is considered more of a backup option for Liverpool. Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim and Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi are reportedly ahead of him in the pecking order for the Liverpool job.
