Coventry sack Robins

Coventry sack Football league’s longest-serving manager Robins.

Coventry City have dismissed Mark Robins, the longest-serving manager in the English Football League, as announced by the Championship club on Thursday, with the team currently sitting in 17th position after 14 matches. The 54-year-old’s departure follows a 2-1 defeat to Derby County at home on Wednesday, which left Coventry level on points with Plymouth Argyle, who occupy a spot in the relegation zone. Robins, who ranks as the third longest-serving manager across the top four divisions of English football, rejoined Coventry for a second tenure in 2017, steering them from League Two to the Championship. In 2023, he guided Coventry to the Championship playoff final, where they were narrowly defeated by Luton Town on penalties, and they also missed an FA Cup final berth after losing to Manchester United in a shootout, despite staging a remarkable comeback from 3-0 down.

“The Club recognises this is a challenging period following more than seven highly successful years under his leadership, and this decision has not been made lightly,” Coventry stated in an announcement.

The team’s long-term performance has been unsatisfactory, prompting the club’s board to swiftly alter the leadership. Assistant manager Rhys Carr has been designated as the interim head before Saturday’s match against league leaders Sunderland.
