Michael van Gerwen returned to winning ways on Monday, claiming his 38th European Tour title at the German Darts Grand Prix in Munich.
The three-time world champion beat fellow Dutchman Gian van Veen 8-5 in the final, capping off a brilliant day with wins over Ryan Searle, Ryan Joyce, Josh Rock, and Van Veen to earn his first ranking title of 2025 and a £30,000 prize.
Van Veen put up a good fight, pulling the score back to 2-2 with an impressive 12-dart leg and a clean 76 checkout. But Van Gerwen regained control, landing a 13-darter to go 7-5 ahead before sealing victory with a double 16 finish.
Speaking after the match, Van Gerwen said, “This means a lot to me. I’ve been struggling lately and needed this win. I always fight back, no matter how tough things get.”
He also acknowledged his difficult run in the Premier League but made it clear he’s far from finished: “I know what I can do, and I want to show it week after week.”
This is Van Gerwen’s fourth title at the German Darts Grand Prix, reaffirming his place among the sport’s greats. In the semi-finals, he beat Josh Rock 7-2 with five straight legs, while Van Veen reached the final with standout wins, including a brilliant 110.81 average against Luke Littler.
Although Van Veen missed out on his first European Tour title just days before his 23rd birthday, he can take pride in a breakout weekend that confirms his potential on the big stage.
