The provinces of Sondrio in Lombardy and Verona in Veneto have come together to establish “The Sixth Ring”, an artistic and cultural project aimed at the Olympic communities leading up to the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games. A bold and innovative program is emerging in Northern Italy in preparation for the 25th Olympic Winter Games, to be held in Milan (Lombardy) and Cortina d’Ampezzo (Belluno) from Friday 6th February to Sunday 22nd February 2026.
“The Sixth Ring” is a joint initiative developed by the Verona-based cultural associations Zebra Cultural Zoo and Mitmacher, both of which are also active in the province of Sondrio. These two regions, located in the north of Italy, are closely situated to the main sporting venues that will attract winter sports enthusiasts from around the world. Verona, a enchanting city in Northern Italy, is a place where art, history, and culture intertwine. Known worldwide as the setting for Romeo and Juliet, it is renowned as the city of love. Sondrio, the capital of Valtellina, is the main economic hub of the region and serves as a gateway between the northern and southern Alps. It is also famous for its sanctuaries and exquisite wines, attracting numerous tourists throughout the year, especially in winter for snow sports.
The extensive program planned for 2025-2026 has been recognised by the Culture Olympics – Milano-Cortina 2026 structure, connecting Valtellina and Verona. These efforts are supported by the Province and the Municipality of Sondrio, as well as the City of Verona, which will provide venues and resources for various initiatives. The main pillars of “The Sixth Ring” are culture, art, and live performances, reflecting the values of sport and the Olympic dream, with a particular focus on educating future generations. The program will bring life to both communities with two years of performances, meetings, educational activities, and community projects inspired by the values of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games.

Live events, theatrical productions, and musicals will feature prominent artists such as director Michela Cescon and maestro Andrea Battistoni. These productions will involve young local artists and technicians, focusing on themes that align with the agenda of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Foundation. Designed for the general public and smaller groups, the initiatives will promote values such as gender equality, accessibility, and environmental sustainability in the Olympic venues. The program will also incorporate student involvement, youth theatre performances, regional and national competitions, roundtables on sporting values, and meetings with prominent athletes.
“We are pleased to announce ‘The Sixth Ring’, a project that not only presents a cultural opportunity but also a significant step in enriching our communities as we prepare for the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games,” stated Davide Menegola, President of the Province of Sondrio. The Mayor of Verona, Damiano Tommasi, added: “This project brings together the values of sport with those of art and culture, bridging worlds that may seem conflicting but, when united, generate immense value for both sport and art. Marcella Fratta, Councillor for Culture of the Municipality of Sondrio, emphasised: “As an Olympic region, we must take advantage of this opportunity for transformation while staying true to our cultural heritage and Lombard identity.”
“The Sixth Ring” promises to leave a lasting cultural legacy for Olympic communities, strengthening values of inclusivity, sustainability, and respect for the environment. It is an example of how the Olympic Games can have a positive impact on local communities.
