The decision to undergo surgery for Mbappe has been officially confirmed, causing concerns about his potential participation in Euro 2024.
Manager of the French national team, Didier Deschamps, has announced that Kylian Mbappe will have to undergo a surgical procedure for the broken nose he sustained during a match on Monday evening.
Towards the end of the match against Austria, Mbappe suffered a head injury after colliding with defender Kevin Danso during a header, in their 1-0 win.
The 25-year-old was visibly covered in blood, indicating that he had suffered a broken nose. As a result, he was replaced after being treated on the field.
Shortly after the event, Deschamps admitted that his top player was not in a good state, while the French Football Association announced that they would produce a protective mask as soon as they could.
There have been lingering uncertainties about the potential date of Mbappe’s comeback and if he would need to undergo surgery for the severe injury.
Deschamps discloses the timing for Mbappe’s surgery
While it has been previously stated that Mbappe is unlikely to play against Netherlands on Friday, Deschamps has clarified that there are no immediate plans for surgery.
Instead, the recently-signed Real Madrid player will have a surgical procedure after France’s involvement in the competition has ended, most likely in July.
In a statement to the press, Deschamps mentioned that on Wednesday, further examinations will be conducted to monitor the progress of the situation. He acknowledged that it was a significant surprise and praised the medical team for their efforts in minimizing the impact through various treatments and tests.
“In case the surgery cannot be performed right away, it will have to be done after the tournament. There has been some improvement in his condition this morning, so we will monitor it closely on a daily basis.”
According to a report from L’Equipe, Mbappe is still holding onto the possibility of playing against Netherlands on Friday. However, it is uncertain if this is a feasible option.
What are the consequences for France and Real Madrid?
Fans of France will be pleased to know that their key player is expected to participate in the remaining matches of the tournament, even though he may not appear until June 25th when they face Poland.
Should Les Bleus manage to secure a position in the top two of Group D, their last-16 match will not take place until the beginning of July, providing Mbappe with additional time for recuperation.
From the viewpoint of Real Madrid, it is not ideal that Mbappe will undergo surgery just before the beginning of pre-season training. However, their recent acquisition will have the opportunity to undergo a number of weeks of rehabilitation before joining his fellow teammates.
Mbappe may be considered ready to play in their first match of the La Liga season, which begins just a month after the Euro 2024 final in mid-August.
