Tennis player Alexis Musialek has lifetime ban reduced to 10 years

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS) has reduced French tennis player Alexis Musialek’s lifetime ban to 10 years, following a partial ruling on his appeal. The original decision, made in August 2023 under the Tennis Anti-Corruption Programme, had banned him for life.

While his ban has been shortened, the fine of $50,000 (around €46,000) remains unchanged. The court overturned 16 of the corruption charges that were previously proven, but upheld 23 others. His period of ineligibility began on 5 August 2023 and will now end on 4 August 2033.

During this time, Musialek is not allowed to play in, coach at, or attend any tennis tournament that is authorised or supported by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA). This includes events run by the ATP, WTA, ITF, Tennis Australia, Fédération Française de Tennis, Wimbledon, the USTA, and all other associated national organisations.

This case comes at a time when sanctions in tennis are on the rise. In a recent report from April, the ITIA highlighted an increase in both doping and corruption cases.

Just hours after Musialek’s ruling, the ITIA also announced new sanctions against four other players. Thai player Natthasith Kunsuwan received a 12-year ban after admitting to 39 corruption breaches. French player Jaimee Floyd Angele was banned for five years and three months after admitting to match-fixing in 2022, refusing to cooperate with investigators, and destroying evidence.

In addition, former Swedish-Brazilian player Christian Lindell has been linked to criminal investigations in Belgium involving a match-fixing network. Meanwhile, former French player Samuel Bensoussan has been suspended for one year and eleven months after being found guilty of fixing four matches.

These decisions reflect the ITIA’s continued efforts to clean up the sport and take strong action against those involved in corruption.
