Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz delivered an exceptionally dominant performance to defeat Serbia’s Novak Djokovic 6-2 6-2 7-6(4) in a rematch of last year’s Wimbledon final, successfully defending his title on Sunday.
Alcaraz now boasts four Grand Slam titles with an unblemished record in major finals, following his two Wimbledon victories, his U.S. Open win in 2022, and his French Open triumph last month.
This loss prevented Djokovic from securing a 25th Grand Slam title, which would have surpassed Margaret Court’s all-time record and matched Roger Federer’s tally of eight men’s singles titles at Wimbledon.
Alcaraz seized his fifth break point in a gruelling first game that lasted 14 minutes. The 21-year-old third seed then dominated the opening set with strong serving.
Second seed Djokovic faced increased pressure at the outset of the second set as Alcaraz overpowered the 37-year-old in the initial exchanges, breaking his serve and taking a commanding two-set lead.
Djokovic and Alcaraz battled fiercely up to 4-4 in the third set, with the Spaniard gaining an advantage through a powerful backhand to go up 5-4. Nonetheless, even after securing a 40-0 lead, he missed three match points and lost his serve. He managed to steady his nerves and secured the win in the tiebreak when Djokovic’s return hit the net.
