The Malta Weightlifting Association (MWA) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) this year, an event of great importance as it also served as an electoral meeting. Jesmond Caruana was re-elected as President for the 2025–2028 term, reaffirming the trust and confidence in his leadership. The rest of the committee remains unchanged, with General Secretary Matthew Camilleri, Treasurer Matthew Abela, and Executive Committee members Rodmar Pulis and Katia Bugeja continuing their dedicated service to the association.
The meeting began with the presentation and approval of the President’s Report, General Secretary’s Report, and Treasurer’s Report. These were followed by a Technical Report celebrating the incredible achievements of Maltese weightlifters on the international stage, with 53 international medals won this year. Special recognition was given to the exceptional performances at the European Juniors, which brought pride and distinction to the nation. A Media Report highlighted both the successes and the areas for future growth, reflecting the association’s commitment to excellence.
One of the highlights of the AGM was the unveiling of the MWA’s ambitious four-year strategic plan, aimed at propelling weightlifting in Malta to new heights. The plan focuses on several key initiatives:
Enabling MWA coaches to achieve international coaching licenses.
Conducting examinations to certify new technical officials internationally.
Expanding developmental programs, including seminars and training camps.
Strengthening the Young Talent Program to nurture future champions.
The opening of the state-of-the-art Weightlifting Training and Competition Centre at the Marsa Sports Complex is a cornerstone of this plan, offering world-class facilities to empower young athletes and elevate the sport’s profile in Malta.
50 Years of Excellence and Ambition
This year holds special significance as the MWA celebrates its 50th anniversary. President Jesmond Caruana emphasised the importance of honoring the association’s legacy while striving for future excellence. Plans are underway to commemorate this milestone with the organization of international competitions in Malta, reflecting the country’s growing prominence in the weightlifting community.
