Aldrin Cassar was reconfirmed as President of Athletics Malta for a new two-year term during the Annual General Meeting of the association, during which the new Association’s Council was elected for the period 2024-2026.
During the same meeting, the other members of the Executive, Nicolai Portelli and Darren Micallef, respectively Secretary and Treasurer, were also reconfirmed to the post following a strong vote of confidence requested by the same candidates in the absence of an election.
On the other hand, an election was required for other Council positions, through which Antonella Chouhal, Claudette Caruana, Vincent Farrrugia, Michelle Micallef, Alan Zammit and Karl Farrugia were elected. This was the first election during which a statute amendment was put in place to ensure gender equality among the non-executive members of the Committee.
During his address, Aldrin Cassar highlighted the Association’s key acheivements during the term which came to an end during the AGM, particularly the improvement in the performance of Maltese athletes, locally and abroad, further investment in the sport facility in Marsa, as well as further investment in coaching. He also expressed his satisfaction at the increasing participation of children and young people in athletics which augurs well for the future of the sport.
He expressed appreciation towards the Malta Olympic Committee and Sport Malta for their support towards investment in local athletes, while appealing for further support towards the increasing administrative requirements of the association.
