The Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research, and Innovation has officially launched the Malta School Games 2025, an exciting new initiative that will see schools across Malta compete in a variety of sports this May. This first-ever competition of its kind will bring together State, Independent, and Church schools, promoting athletic excellence, teamwork, and inclusivity.
The Malta School Games will take place between May 19 and 23, featuring events in athletics, swimming, basketball, football, netball, and rugby, among other disciplines. The initiative aims to encourage physical activity, foster healthy competition, and strengthen the role of sports in education.
A Historic Torch Relay
The launch was marked by a symbolic Torch Relay, in which secondary school students paraded from the Education Ministry in Floriana to the Triton Fountain. The torch, carried by young athletes from San Gorg Preca College, represents unity, perseverance, and teamwork, which are core values of the competition.
The flame will officially mark the start of the games, embodying the ideals of hope, respect, and friendship, reflecting the Olympic spirit of Excellence, Respect, and Friendship. The relay was an emotional and inspiring moment, reinforcing the importance of sports in shaping the next generation of student-athletes.
The Malta School Games Logo: A Symbol of Inclusivity and Aspiration
During the event, the official logo of the Malta School Games 2024 was also unveiled. The design serves as a vibrant and dynamic representation of school sports spirit, with several key symbolic elements:
- A Circular Arrangement of Figures: The logo features eight interconnected human figures, forming a star. This represents inclusion, diversity, and unity, reflecting how students from different schools and backgrounds come together to celebrate sportsmanship. The interconnected figures highlight the importance of teamwork, collaboration, and shared experiences in both competition and personal growth.
- The Meaning Behind the Colours: The variety of colours in the logo symbolises the different sports disciplines represented in the Malta School Games. Each colour conveys important values:
- Red: Passion and determination
- Blue: Trust and resilience
- Green: Growth and balance
- Yellow: Energy and enthusiasm
- Purple: Creativity and ambition
- Teal: Perseverance and focus
- The Star Formation: The figures form a star, symbolising excellence, aspiration, and achievement—the key objectives of the Malta School Games. The star shape also represents guidance and inspiration, encouraging students to strive for their personal best in sports and beyond.
A Commitment to Student Well-Being
In a statement, the Education Ministry emphasised the government’s commitment to student well-being through sports and competitive events. By encouraging students to engage in physical activity, the Malta School Games aim to support mental and physical health, teamwork, and personal development.
As anticipation builds for this exciting event in May, the Malta School Games 2025 and its newly unveiled logo serve as a powerful symbol of unity, perseverance, and youthful talent. Whether through the torch relay, the diverse sports competitions, or the inspirational branding, this initiative is set to unite schools through sport, inspiring young athletes to embrace fair play, collaboration, and excellence.
