Montpellier seek to gain points as they host Lyon

After briefly lifting the spirits of their supporters with consecutive 2-1 wins against Monaco and Toulouse in the previous month, Montpellier, currently at the bottom of the table, have gone back to their usual form. They are set to face Lyon this weekend, aiming to avoid a third straight 2-0 loss. Despite hoping to improve their record against Lyon, having only won one out of the last eight encounters, the odds seem slim as they haven’t kept a clean sheet against Lyon since August 2019.

Montpellier

Montpellier is no stranger to defensive struggles, having already let in 48 goals in the league this season, the second-highest in Ligue 1 after 21 matches in the past 45 years! Their hope for survival may lie in their performances at home, with Jean-Louis Gasset’s team securing 12 out of their meagre 15 points at the Stade de la Mosson this season.

Lyon has managed to secure wins with a one-goal lead in their last three trips to Montpellier. However, they are now heading to the game without a single victory in their previous five away matches in all competitions (D3, L2). In the league, their success on the road has been scarce since early November, with just one win and a solitary point gained from their last four away games, despite consistently finding the net.

Although Lyon’s recent away form has been lacking, they will come into this match with high spirits following a commanding 4-0 victory over Reims at home, breaking a streak of seven winless competitive games (D4, L3). Paulo Fonseca’s side currently sits in sixth place after securing three points from that emphatic win. The Portuguese manager, appointed at the end of January, will be aiming for his fifth consecutive undefeated encounter against Montpellier (W3, D1).

Key Players to Keep an Eye On: With the departure of other goal-scorers in the recent transfer period, Téji Savanier stands out as the sole Montpellier player who has managed to score at home in 2025. Meanwhile, Corentin Tolisso has been displaying exceptional form by consistently finding the back of the net in the second half of Lyon’s previous three matches.

Noteworthy Statistic: Montpellier’s defence has struggled, allowing an early goal in nine out of their last ten home league fixtures.
