Red Bull driver Max Verstappen is the winner of today’s Formula 1 race for the Spanish Grand Prix.
The two-time consecutive world champion achieved his 40th triumph in his career at the Catalunya track, and he completed his dominance during the race weekend with first place in all free practice sessions and first place in Saturday’s qualifying.
Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell also climbed to the podium.
Sergio Perez from Red Bull finished in fourth place, home driver Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) crossed the finish line fifth, while Aston Martin drivers Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso took sixth and seventh place.
Esteban Ocon from Alpino, Guanyu Zhou from Alfa Romeo, and another Alpino driver Pierre Gasly also won points.
In the general ranking after seven races, Verstappen leads with 170 points, Perez is second with 117 points, and Alonso is third with 99 points.
Verstappen and Sainz started the race from the first starting row, behind them were Lando Norris from McLaren and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, while Stroll and Ocon were in the third starting row.
Of the other drivers, Perez started from 11th place, behind him was Russell, while Charles Leclerc from Ferrari and Williams driver Logan Sargent started from the pit lane due to changes to the car.
Most of the drivers started the race on soft tires, with the exception of Verstappen and Perez, who began on medium-hard tires, and Leclerc, who started on hard tires.
Sainz tried to attack Verstappen right at the start, but the Dutch driver managed to defend himself and stay in first place.
In the first lap, there was contact between Hamilton and Norris, due to which the McLaren driver soon had to pit, and Hamilton then lost third place to Stroll but soon passed him.
Russell reached the fifth place after 11 laps, after passing Ocon, and it was the Alpine driver who was the first of the leaders to change tires on lap 14.
Stroll, Sainz, Leclerc, and Alonso then went to the pits, while in the 25th lap, Hamilton went for a change, coming back behind Sainz.
In the 26th lap, Russell again successfully attacked Ocon for sixth place, and a lap later Verstappen pits and returns to first place.
His team-mate pits on lap 28 and returns to ninth place, while the same lap also saw a successful attack by Hamilton to take over second place from Sainz.
The Spanish driver was passed by another Mercedes driver in the 35th lap for third place, and Sainz went to the second stop seven laps later.
In the 46th lap, Russell pits, then Hamilton and Perez, and the Mexican returns to the track behind Sainz in fifth place, but with new soft tires.
Peres used that advantage and passed the local driver in the 53rd lap, and in the same lap the leading Verstappen went for the second tire change. The Dutchman is back in safe first place with a big lead over Hamilton.
With four laps to go, Alfa Tauri’s Yuki Tsunoda, who was then ninth, received an additional five-second penalty, which will ultimately leave him without points. Tsunoda was penalized for pushing Guanyu Joe off the track.
At the end of the race, there was a fight for an extra point for the fastest lap, and Verstappen won it.
The championship continues on June 18 with the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.
