Acciona and Eiffage win €83.2M contract to build Madrid’s new Formula 1 circuit

Spanish engineering giant Acciona and French construction firm Eiffage have secured the contract to build Madrid’s new Formula 1 circuit, a landmark project that will bring the world’s premier motorsport series to the heart of Spain’s capital.

The joint venture, led by Acciona with a 60% stake, and Eiffage holding the remaining 40%, will oversee the construction of a 5.47-kilometre (3.35-mile) track set in Madrid’s northeastern urban zone, surrounding the IFEMA exhibition centre. Work on the project is scheduled to begin this month, with completion expected by May 2026. The total cost of the development is estimated at €83.2 million ($94.57 million).

This new addition aligns with Formula 1’s strategy of shifting races into major cities to create immersive experiences that combine racing, entertainment, and accessibility. Recent urban circuits—like those in Las Vegas, Miami, Jeddah, and Singapore—have been designed to bring fans closer to the action with surrounding concerts, fan zones, and modern hospitality offerings.

The Madrid circuit is set to replace Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya as the future home of the Spanish Grand Prix. While the Barcelona track is located around 32 km outside the city and less accessible by public transport, Madrid’s city-centre location promises greater connectivity and fan engagement.

The 2026 season is expected to mark Madrid’s full debut as host of the Spanish Grand Prix. Meanwhile, Barcelona will remain on the calendar for 2025, fulfilling the final year of its current contract, setting up a temporary overlap between the two venues.

This project signifies not just a major infrastructural investment but also a symbolic shift in Spain’s motorsport landscape, aligning the country with Formula 1’s vision of high-octane entertainment in urban cores.
