The football world is mourning the untimely death of Gabonese striker Aaron Boupendza, who tragically passed away at the age of 28 after falling from the 11th floor of a building in China, the Gabonese Football Federation (FEGAFOOT) confirmed on Wednesday.
Boupendza, who recently joined Zhejiang FC, had been in promising form in the Chinese Super League, scoring four goals in six matches. His dynamic presence on the pitch and natural goal-scoring ability earned him recognition at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, where he left a lasting impact for Gabon.

“At 28, Boupendza is remembered as a great striker who left a lasting impression at the African Cup of Nations,” FEGAFOOT said in an official statement. “Trained at CF Mounana and later at Bordeaux in France, Boupendza built an international career that saw him play in Romania, Turkey, Qatar, the United States, and most recently, China.”
Authorities in China have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the fall, which is currently being treated as unexplained. Media reports from Romania noted that investigators are exploring whether the incident was accidental, suicidal, or involved foul play. No official cause of death has been confirmed.

Gabon’s President Brice Oligui Nguema expressed deep sorrow over the loss:
“It is with great sadness that I learn of the tragic death of Aaron Boupendza, a talented centre-forward who brought honour to Gabonese soccer. I offer my sincere condolences to his family and friends. May God bless his soul.”
Known for his strength, agility, and instinctive finishing, Boupendza had a career that spanned several top-flight leagues, including standout performances in Turkey’s Süper Lig with Hatayspor, and a stint in Major League Soccer with FC Cincinnati.
His passing is a devastating loss not only to Gabonese football but to the broader international football community, which has lost a player in the prime of his career. FEGAFOOT extended heartfelt condolences to Boupendza’s family, loved ones, and the entire Gabonese football family during this time of profound grief.
