YoHealth Malta Premier 2025/26 –Opening round Matchday 16
Ħamrun Spartans…..1
Sliema Wanderers….0
Ħamrun Spartans completed a dramatic turnaround to finish the Opening Round top of the table after edging Sliema Wanderers 1-0, a result made even more significant by Floriana being held to a draw in the capital derby against Valletta. Having trailed the Greens by four points with just 180 minutes remaining, the Spartans delivered when it mattered most to clinch first place emphatically.
The match was keenly contested, with Ħamrun consistently showing the greater attacking intent, although Sliema produced a disciplined and commendable performance. In the closing stages, the Wanderers pushed hard in search of an equaliser, but the composure and decisiveness of Henry Bonello ensured the champions held on.
As expected, Ħamrun set the tempo early, dominating possession while Sliema remained compact in their own half. Despite this, the first clear chance fell to the Wanderers when Plut fired narrowly wide after a well worked move down the left involving Espíndola.
The balance of the game gradually shifted towards midfield, with both sides battling for control, until the breakthrough arrived in the 29th minute. Colombian forward Damir Ceter showed sharp movement inside the penalty area, turning well before finishing low past Al Tumi to give Ħamrun a deserved lead.
Ħamrun continued to threaten and, in the 36th minute, Al Tumi was forced into a smart save to deny Garcia from close range. Three minutes later, former Spartans player Roko Prša appeared to have levelled matters from point-blank range, but the goal was disallowed following a Video Review, with an earlier infringement identified in the build-up.
Sliema’s best opportunity arrived late on, in the 88th minute, when Bonello produced a decisive save to deny Bah with a fine strike. Deep into added time, the Ħamrun goalkeeper was again called into action, tipping Nwoko’s effort onto the upright to preserve the lead.
The Spartans’ players were forced to wait for the final whistle in Floriana’s match before celebrations could begin, but once confirmation arrived, the sense of achievement was unmistakable. This hard-fought 1-0 victory not only secured all three points, but also confirmed Ħamrun Spartans’ ability to deliver under pressure, closing the Opening Round firmly at the summit of the standings.
