Juventus secured a 2-0 victory against Torino in the derby, thanks to goals by Timothy Weah and Kenan Yildiz.
This win on Saturday not only continued Juventus’ dominant streak against their city rivals but also propelled them to third place in the Serie A rankings. Currently, Juventus shares 24 points with Inter Milan, who sits in second place, while they trail leaders Napoli by just one point. Inter is set to play Napoli on Sunday. Meanwhile, Torino finds themselves in 11th position with 14 points.
Torino’s visit to the Juventus Stadium was overshadowed by their poor track record against their neighbours, having failed to secure a win in their last 18 encounters, and their recent form offered little optimism, with five losses in six matches. Weah capitalised on a rebound from Torino’s goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic in the 18th minute, and Yildiz sealed the victory with a header six minutes before full-time, leaving Juventus as the only unbeaten team in Serie A.
The first half saw Juventus showing attacking potential, yet aside from the goal and a straightforward save of a Dusan Vlahovic shot by the keeper, Thiago Motta’s squad struggled to transform possession into tangible opportunities.
Juve opened the scoring when Andrea Cambiaso dashed into the box and unleashed a shot that Milinkovic-Savic should have caught. Weah, finding himself in an opportune position, effortlessly guided the ball into the net, already beginning his celebration. The fans from both sides filled the stadium with noise befitting the occasion, but the players mostly failed to rise to it on the field. Torino managed to spend more time in Juventus’ half after halftime, yet they never truly seemed capable of drawing level. Juventus forward Francisco Conceicao almost electrified the match with a long-range curling shot that narrowly missed the post. However, shortly after, his cross provided the assurance of a second goal. Conceicao burst down the right, entered the box, and delivered a cross to the far post where Yildiz’s diving header found the net.
Yildiz paid homage to his hero, former Juve star Alessandro Del Piero, who turned 50 on Saturday, by celebrating in the same manner, tongue out, capturing the brightest moment in an otherwise lacklustre derby.
