Spanish Cesc Fabregas has been named the head coach of Como, a club where he holds a minority stake, after guiding them to Serie A promotion as both assistant and interim coach last season, the club announced on Friday.
The former Arsenal, Barcelona, and Chelsea midfielder concluded his playing days at Como in 2023 and transitioned into an assistant coaching role. The 37-year-old stepped in as interim coach in November following the dismissal of head coach Moreno Longo.
Under Fabregas’s leadership, Como ascended from seventh to third place in Serie B before Osian Roberts was appointed as interim coach in December, with Fabregas continuing as his assistant. Como achieved automatic promotion by finishing second in the league.
Roberts will now assume the role of head of development at Como, according to a club statement.
“I am thrilled to commence this season as head coach and I appreciate the ownership group for entrusting me with this role,” Fabregas stated. “This season will be challenging and significant, but my coaching staff and I are prepared and fully confident.”
On Friday, Como announced their initial signing under Fabregas’ management, welcoming Alberto Moreno, who previously played for Liverpool, Sevilla, and Villarreal. Moreno has agreed to a one-year deal with the potential for an automatic extension for an additional season. “Alberto is a quick, nimble, and technically skilled defender with extensive international experience from playing in major European tournaments,” Fabregas remarked. “His attributes will undoubtedly be valuable as we tackle a new and challenging league.” Como will start their Serie A season at Juventus on 19 August.
