Spain secured their place in the UEFA Nations League semi-finals after a dramatic 5-4 penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands, following a pulsating 3-3 draw in the second leg at Mestalla Stadium on Sunday. The tie ended 5-5 on aggregate, with the hosts ultimately prevailing in the decisive spot-kicks.
The first leg in Rotterdam had already provided late drama, as Spain grabbed a stoppage-time equaliser against a 10-man Dutch side to secure a 2-2 draw. The return match in Valencia was no different, offering an enthralling contest filled with goals, momentum swings, and nerve-wracking moments.

A Rollercoaster Encounter
Spain wasted no time asserting their dominance, taking the lead in the eighth minute when Mikel Oyarzabal calmly converted from the penalty spot after Jan Paul van Hecke fouled him inside the area. The hosts nearly doubled their advantage moments later when Nico Williams broke through one-on-one with Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, but the shot-stopper made a crucial save to keep the deficit at one.
Despite Spain’s attacking threat, the Netherlands controlled possession for much of the first half, searching for an equaliser. Their persistence paid off early in the second half when Robin Le Normand brought down Memphis Depay in the box, and the Dutch forward confidently slotted home the resulting penalty to level the score at 1-1.

Spain responded in the 67th minute, launching a swift counter-attack. Williams turned provider this time, setting up an unmarked Oyarzabal. Although Verbruggen initially blocked his attempt, Oyarzabal reacted quickly to nod home the rebound and restore Spain’s lead.
However, the Netherlands refused to back down. In the 79th minute, Ian Maatsen made a stunning impact on his international debut, smashing a powerful strike from a tight angle past Unai Simon to make it 2-2 and send the match into extra time.
Extra-Time Drama and Penalty Shootout Heroics
Spain looked to have sealed the victory in the 103rd minute when Lamine Yamal produced a moment of magic. The young sensation latched onto a long pass from Dutch-born Dean Huijsen, shrugged off his marker, and curled a brilliant left-footed shot into the far corner, sending the home crowd into raptures.
Yet, the Dutch had one more twist in store. Three minutes into the second period of extra time, Xavi Simons was brought down in the box by Simon, and he stepped up to convert the penalty himself, making it 3-3 and ensuring the game would be decided by a nerve-wracking shootout.
The tension was palpable as both teams traded successful penalties through the first three rounds before each missed their fourth attempt. The defining moment came in the sixth round when Donyell Malen’s attempt was saved by Simon, allowing Pedri to step up and dispatch the winning penalty, sending Spain into the final four.
Spain to Face France in Semi-Finals
With this thrilling victory, Spain now advance to the semi-finals, where they will face France, who also progressed via a narrow penalty shootout win over Croatia. The much-anticipated clash will take place on June 5 in Stuttgart, as Spain continue their quest for Nations League glory.
