Portugal secured a dramatic 5-2 victory over Denmark after extra time on Sunday, clinching a 5-3 aggregate win to book their place in the Nations League semi-finals against Germany.
Cristiano Ronaldo played a pivotal role in Portugal’s triumph despite missing an early penalty. The legendary forward remained a driving force for his team and fans before being substituted ahead of extra time. Portugal, initially trailing 1-0 from the first leg in Copenhagen, found themselves tested early on when Patrick Dorgu fouled Ronaldo in the penalty area just three minutes into the game. However, Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel denied the Portuguese captain from the spot.
Despite Ronaldo’s early struggles, Portugal took the lead in the 38th minute when Danish defender Joachim Andersen inadvertently headed a corner into his own net. Denmark responded in the second half, leveling the match in the 56th minute through Rasmus Kristensen’s header from a corner.
Ronaldo briefly restored Portugal’s lead with a tight-angled finish, but Christian Eriksen’s goal in the 76th minute put Denmark back ahead on aggregate. Enter Francisco Trincao, who stepped off the bench to deliver a stunning performance. The young forward struck in the 86th minute to force extra time and then netted a composed clipped finish in the 91st minute, swinging the tie firmly in Portugal’s favor.
Denmark showed resilience but ran out of energy as the match wore on, and substitute Goncalo Ramos sealed the victory with Portugal’s fifth goal. The home crowd erupted in celebration as Portugal marched on to face Germany in the semi-finals, who edged past Italy 5-4 on aggregate.
“We knew it was going to be a difficult game, but we stayed united as a team and as a family. We are happy with the victory,” Trincao said after the match. “Cristiano really helps to encourage the fans, and we knew how to suffer and fight for the result.”
With Portugal’s mix of experience and youthful depth, Trincao emphasized that squad unity is key. “We know that everyone has great ability. Today it was us; tomorrow, it will be others. We all have to be ready to play, always respecting the coach’s decisions.”
Portugal will now shift their focus to the highly anticipated semi-final clash against Germany as they continue their pursuit of Nations League glory.
