Germany secured a 2-1 comeback victory against Italy in the first leg of their UEFA Nations League quarter-final at Milan’s San Siro stadium. Second-half headers from Tim Kleindienst and Leon Goretzka overturned an early goal by Italy’s Sandro Tonali, giving Germany a crucial advantage ahead of the return leg in Dortmund.
Italy started the match strongly, taking the lead in the 9th minute. Sandro Tonali showcased his skill with a well-placed shot that found the back of the net, putting the hosts ahead early.
Germany struggled to find their rhythm in the first half, with Italy’s aggressive defense and effective counter-attacks, led by Nicolò Barella, hindering their progress. However, tactical changes by coach Julian Nagelsmann during halftime, including the introduction of Tim Kleindienst and Nico Schlotterbeck, rejuvenated the team.
The substitutions paid off quickly. In the 49th minute, Joshua Kimmich delivered a precise cross into the box, which Kleindienst met with a powerful header to equalize the score.
Germany continued to press, and their efforts were rewarded in the 76th minute. Kimmich’s corner found Goretzka, who made a slight touch to send the ball past Italy’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, securing the lead for the visitors.
Despite Italy’s attempts to respond, Germany’s defense, bolstered by goalkeeper Oliver Baumann’s crucial saves, maintained their advantage. This victory marks Germany’s first away win over Italy since 1986, ending a long-standing drought.
The second leg is scheduled for March 23, 2025, in Dortmund, where Germany will aim to secure their place in the semi-finals of the Nations League.
