Germany selects Man City goalkeeper Ortega for his first international call-up at the age of 32.
Germany has included Manchester City’s goalkeeper Stefan Ortega in their squad for the first time ahead of their upcoming Nations League fixtures against Bosnia and Hungary in November. Ortega, who serves as a substitute for Ederson at the Premier League titleholders, joined City in 2022. Although his appearances in the Premier League are limited due to Ederson’s primary role, Ortega frequently plays in the Champions League and domestic cup matches. His performances have been commendable, with City manager Pep Guardiola praising him as “a world-class goalkeeper, an exceptional, exceptional goalkeeper” towards the end of last season. In the German national team, Ortega is expected to be the third choice behind Alexander Nuebel and Oliver Baumann.
Germany, having already secured a spot in the Nations League quarter-finals as Group A3 leaders, will face Bosnia at home on November 16 before heading to Hungary three days later.
“Having secured a place in the quarter-finals, our aim is now to clinch the top position in the group,” stated Julian Nagelsmann, coach of Germany. “Advancing to the Nations League final four next year is a significant step forward as we prepare for the 2026 World Cup.”
