Malta collected their first point of the FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign after battling to a goalless draw against Lithuania at the National Stadium. While the performance was far from convincing, the result marked a small but important step forward for coach Emilio De Leo and his squad.

The match started with Malta on the back foot, struggling to gain any control during the opening 45 minutes. Lithuania dominated possession and dictated the tempo, with the home side rarely managing to venture into attacking territory.

However, after the interval, Malta showed signs of improvement. Coach De Leo’s halftime adjustments appeared to pay off as Malta began to find gaps in Lithuania’s defence and registered a few chances—though they rarely tested goalkeeper Edvinas Gertmonas.

Despite the improved second-half showing, neither side could find a breakthrough. For Malta, the draw will serve as a confidence boost ahead of a challenging trip to face Euro 2024 semi-finalists the Netherlands in Groningen on Tuesday.

Tactical Changes and Key Moments

De Leo made one change from the team that lost 2-0 to Poland, reintroducing Jodi Jones to the starting XI in place of Ilyas Chouaref. Meanwhile, Lithuania had a late reshuffle as Pijas Sirvis withdrew from the squad due to a family bereavement, with Kaludijus Upstas stepping in.

The opening stages of the match were largely uneventful, with few chances of note. Lithuania’s Gvidas Gineitis fired wide on 11 minutes, the first real attempt at goal. Malta responded in the 23rd minute when Joseph Mbong’s backheel released Luke Montebello, who slipped, allowing Paul Mbong to follow up—only to be blocked by the Lithuanian defence.

Satariano produced a crucial defensive block at the other end shortly after to deny Gytis Paulauskas a likely goal, while Paulauskas narrowly missed with another effort before halftime.

In the second half, Lithuania came closest to scoring on 52 minutes when Artur Dolznikov’s curling strike struck the crossbar with Bonello beaten.

Malta’s first effort on target came at the hour mark through Paul Mbong, whose low shot was deflected for a corner. Zach Muscat nearly scored from the resulting set piece but failed to connect from close range.

As the game progressed, Malta looked more positive. Ryan Camenzuli flashed a shot just wide on 65 minutes, and in the closing stages, substitute Keyon Ewurum set up Satariano, who saw his shot graze the upright.

Malta had one final claim for a penalty in stoppage time when a header from Pepe appeared to hit a Lithuanian defender’s arm, but the referee waved play on.

Looking Ahead

Although Malta will not be entirely satisfied with the display, the draw provides a vital morale lift and halts a run of defeats. Coach De Leo will now shift focus to the daunting task of facing the Netherlands, hopeful that his side can build on this solid defensive showing and develop greater attacking cohesion in the matches to come.
