Memphis and Dumfries shine as Netherlands lead qualifying action

The Netherlands delivered a professional and composed performance on Saturday, earning a 2–0 victory away to Finland in the latest round of UEFA World Cup qualifiers. First-half pressure and disciplined execution allowed Ronald Koeman’s squad to take early control, with Memphis Depay finding the net in the 6th minute after capitalizing on a defensive slip.

Denzel Dumfries added a second after the interval, capping a night in which the Dutch controlled proceedings with superior ball movement and pressing. Finland struggled to build meaningful attacks, rarely troubling the visitors, who looked sharp and well-drilled throughout.

England recorded a third straight win in Group K with a 1–0 victory over Andorra, though the performance did little to silence growing concerns about the team’s creativity. Captain Harry Kane scored early in the second half, but the rest of the match was marked by sluggish play and a lack of urgency.

Manager Thomas Tuchel didn’t hold back in his post-match comments, citing poor body language and insufficient intensity as worrying signs. Nonetheless, England’s spotless defensive record and maximum points offer some reassurance ahead of more difficult tests.

Bosnia and Herzegovina made it three wins from three, defeating San Marino 1–0 in a match where they enjoyed plenty of possession but lacked cutting edge. Edin Dzeko scored their only goal. Though expected to win by a wider margin, the hosts took all three points and remain in command of Group H.

While the performance wasn’t flashy, the result maintains their perfect record and keeps momentum on their side.

In a tightly contested clash, Austria emerged 2–1 winners against Romania. Both teams had their moments, but Austria’s greater composure in key areas proved decisive. Romania pressed hard in the latter stages but couldn’t break through a well-organized Austrian defence.

Michael Gregoritsch put the Austrians upfront with Marcel Sabitzer adding another. Florin Tanase reduced the arrears for Romania.

The outcome puts both sides on level footing in the group standings, increasing competition behind current leaders Bosnia.

In Tirana, Albania and Serbia played out a tense but uneventful 0–0 draw. With both teams appearing wary of mistakes, chances were few and far between in what was their first official meeting since their heated clash over a decade ago.

Though the result leaves both teams with room for improvement, it also avoids controversy and keeps Albania unbeaten in the group.
