Feyenoord narrowly defeat reigning champions PSV to clinch the Johan Cruyff Shield

Feyenoord, the winners of the Cup, narrowly defeated PSV Eindhoven, the league champions, in a thrilling start to the new Dutch season.

The Johan Cruyff Shield match ended in a dramatic 4-4 draw, with Feyenoord emerging victorious in a penalty shootout.

PSV took an early lead, but had to come from behind three times to level the score. The match saw three penalties awarded, with Feyenoord converting two of them. After a thrilling first half, Feyenoord led 2-1 thanks to Santiago Gimenez’s penalty in the 29th minute and Baas Nieuwkoop’s strike in the 33rd minute.

PSV’s experienced striker, Luuk de Jong, equalized just three minutes into the second half. However, Feyenoord quickly regained their advantage as Gimenez converted another penalty after being fouled by PSV goalkeeper Walter Benitez just before the hour mark.

PSV equalized in the 65th minute with a goal from Guus Til, who had just come on as a substitute. However, their joy was short-lived as Antoni Milambo quickly put Feyenoord back in the lead, making it 4-3. In the 80th minute, De Jong scored his second goal from a penalty, awarded after a foul by Feyenoord’s new goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther, bringing the score to 4-4 and forcing the match into a shootout after 90 minutes. This victory marks Feyenoord’s fifth Johan Cruyff Shield, while PSV had previously won the Super Cup three times in a row.
