Marko Arnautović has officially joined Red Star Belgrade, completing a deeply personal transfer that honours a promise he made to his former coach and close friend, Siniša Mihajlović. The move marks a significant moment in the Austrian striker’s career, not only professionally but also emotionally.
During his unveiling, Arnautović broke down in tears as he recalled the strong bond he shared with Mihajlović, who passed away in 2022 following a long battle with leukemia. The two formed a close connection during their time together at Bologna, where Mihajlović served as head coach and mentor. Their relationship extended far beyond the football pitch, evolving into a deep friendship.
“I made a promise to Siniša that I would play for Red Star Belgrade,” Arnautović told journalists. “It was something we talked about almost every day. Now that I’m here, and I’ve seen the stadium and the fans, I’ve cried more in the last two days than I have in my entire life.”
Arnautović also shared that Mihajlović’s family had encouraged the move. “I spoke with his family about this decision, and they were very supportive. Siniša wasn’t just a coach, he was like a father and a brother to me. He meant everything.”
At 35, Arnautović returns to the Balkans with vast experience from clubs across Europe, including stints in the Premier League, Serie A, and the Bundesliga. But for him, this transfer is about more than football, it’s about keeping a promise and paying tribute to someone who helped shape his journey.
Red Star Belgrade will now benefit from Arnautović’s leadership and experience, as the striker begins a new chapter that blends sporting ambition with heartfelt personal meaning.
