YoHealth Malta Premier – Closing Round
Floriana….2
Mosta……..1
Floriana recovered from an early setback to record a 2-1 victory over Mosta and claim their second consecutive win in the Closing Round of the Maltese Premier League.
The match began in dramatic fashion, with Mosta taking the lead after just 27 seconds. Cheikh Diamanka released Prince Chubizor through the centre, and the Nigerian forward showed composure to lift the ball over Floriana goalkeeper David Cioletti and into the net.
Floriana responded positively and began to assert control through possession and movement. Federico Varela tested Mosta goalkeeper Akpan after six minutes with a firm strike, before following up the rebound only to be denied again. Rui Areias then went close on 16 minutes when he broke clear but fired over the crossbar.
The equaliser arrived two minutes later through a moment of quality. Varela collected the ball outside the penalty area from a tight angle and curled a precise effort into the top corner, leaving Akpan with no chance.
Mosta thought they had regained the lead on 34 minutes following a cross from Joao Victor, but the move was halted when Diamanka was unable to keep the ball in play before Giancarlo Goncalves finished, resulting in the goal being disallowed.
Floriana completed the turnaround early in the second half. Five minutes after the restart, Jake Grech struck a powerful effort from distance that beat Akpan to give the Greens the advantage.
Floriana controlled much of the remainder of the contest, although Mosta remained a threat on the counter attack. With seven minutes remaining, Zachary Brincat struck a volley that crashed against the crossbar before Cioletti reacted sharply to push away the rebound.
Floriana managed the closing stages effectively to secure all three points and maintain their strong start to the Closing Round.
