Michail Antonio has been released from the hospital less than a month after surviving a severe car crash that left him with a broken leg.
The 34-year-old West Ham forward was involved in the incident in Epping, Essex, on December 7, while driving his £260,000 Ferrari FF. Antonio was on his way home from West Ham’s Rush Green training ground when the accident occurred. He underwent surgery that same evening and spent Christmas Day in the hospital before being discharged. Unfortunately, his injury rules him out for the rest of the season.
West Ham rallied in support of their teammate, wearing shirts with Antonio’s name during an emotional 2-1 victory over Wolves. The players’ match-worn jerseys, including captain Jarrod Bowen’s, were auctioned to raise funds for the NHS and Air Ambulances UK. Combined with a matching donation from the club’s board, the fundraiser generated an impressive £59,226. Bowen’s shirt fetched the highest amount, selling for £3,005.
Speaking about the community’s support, Bowen said, “It’s been heartwarming to see the West Ham family and the wider football community come together for Mic. We are all incredibly grateful for the care provided by the NHS and Air Ambulances UK during such a challenging time for Mic and his family.”
Antonio, who has been with West Ham for nearly a decade, is out of contract at the end of the season. While the club has not yet decided on his future, Antonio’s recovery remains the priority.
