Joshua Zirkzee breaks down in tears after brutal early susbtitution

Joshua Zirkzee was visibly emotional after being substituted just 33 minutes into Manchester United’s loss to Newcastle United.

The Dutch striker was replaced with United trailing 2-0, as manager Ruben Amorim sought to regain control against a dominant Magpies side at Old Trafford. Kobbie Mainoo took Zirkzee’s place to loud cheers from the home supporters, highlighting the crowd’s discontent with the forward’s performance.

Zirkzee, a £36 million summer signing, appeared stunned by the early substitution. He initially headed straight to the tunnel before returning to the bench, where he was spotted with tears in his eyes. According to reports from beIN Sports and Sky Germany, the moment was deeply distressing for the 22-year-old.

Former United captain Gary Neville expressed sympathy for Zirkzee during commentary. “I have to feel sorry for him,” Neville remarked. “He’s been cheered off by his own fans, which is brutal. You don’t see that often at Old Trafford. It’s a tough moment for the lad.”

Post-match, Amorim explained the tactical decision behind the substitution, clarifying that the move was not meant to single out Zirkzee but to address broader issues within the team. “Joshua is our player, and we wanted more strength up front,” Amorim stated. “We’ve been conceding first from set pieces, so we needed more presence in those situations. Sometimes you adjust one side and leave another exposed.”

He added: “It was tough on me as well. I’ve spoken with Josh because it’s important he understands. I’ve been in his position before, and I know it’s hard. The team was struggling, and we needed an extra midfielder to cope. It wasn’t about him personally—it was about the team.”

The episode highlighted the mounting pressure on United amid their current struggles, with fans’ frustrations boiling over and challenging the squad’s resolve.
