Aston Villa extended their unbeaten home run in the Premier League to 16 matches with a commanding 4-1 victory over Newcastle United at Villa Park, keeping their hopes of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League firmly alive.
Unai Emery’s side made a flying start, taking the lead inside the first minute through Ollie Watkins. The England forward, restored to the starting line-up, saw his shot deflect off Fabian Schär and beat Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope at the near post.
Watkins came close to doubling his tally moments later, striking the crossbar with a powerful left-footed effort from a tight angle. The lively forward continued to cause problems for the visitors and was involved in another incident when Schär, who had already been booked, brought him down as the last man but escaped further punishment.
Despite Villa’s early dominance, Newcastle found an equaliser through Schär, who made amends by heading in Harvey Barnes’ cross. The ball slipped through the legs of Emiliano Martínez at the back post to level the score.
Villa had chances to retake the lead before half-time. Marco Asensio failed to connect cleanly with a loose ball in the penalty area, while Watkins once again hit the woodwork, this time with a header from a set-piece. The home side continued to apply pressure, with Morgan Rogers and John McGinn forcing saves from Pope, and Sandro Tonali testing Martínez at the other end.
Villa resumed the second half with renewed intent and eventually regained the lead just after the hour. Watkins turned provider, breaking forward before slipping a pass to Ian Maatsen, who finished clinically into the far corner for his first Premier League goal.
The hosts quickly extended their advantage. Substitute Jacob Ramsey delivered a low cross that was inadvertently turned into his own net by Dan Burn, leaving Pope wrong-footed. The momentum was firmly with Villa, and they soon made it four.
Amadou Onana, another substitute, added his name to the scoresheet with a stunning strike into the top corner, moments after Pope had saved from Rogers at close range. Villa’s relentless attacking display nearly produced a fifth goal, with Ramsey curling an effort onto the post late on — the third time Villa struck the woodwork during the match.
Newcastle, who came into the fixture in good form, struggled to contain Villa’s movement and tempo. The defeat marked their fifth loss in six visits to Villa Park. With the result, Villa narrow the gap on Newcastle to just two points in the Premier League standings.
Watkins was named Man of the Match for his opening goal and his involvement in the build-up to Villa’s second. The result further underlines Aston Villa’s strength at home and their growing credentials in the race for European football.
