Liverpool make move to sign Kevin De Bruyne as City exit looms

Liverpool have reportedly launched a bold bid to sign Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne, with the Belgian midfielder set to leave the Etihad Stadium at the end of the season after not being offered a contract extension.

De Bruyne, who has helped City win six Premier League titles during a glittering spell, looks set for a new challenge — and Liverpool are keen to bring him to Anfield. According to Sky Sport Italia, the Reds have already tabled an offer to sign the 33-year-old on a free transfer as incoming manager Arne Slot looks to strengthen his squad this summer.

De Bruyne, who recently scored the winning goal against Wolves, has made clear he wants to continue competing at the highest level and is open to a move to one of City’s direct rivals. Speaking after the Wolves game, he said:

“I know I only have one home game left but I just try to do my job. A lot of teammates have said it’s sad I have to go but that’s life sometimes. I don’t know what the future holds, but I know I can still play here.”

The Belgian has not hidden his frustration with City’s handling of his exit, having expressed dissatisfaction even with senior club figures nearby. Now, Liverpool are among several clubs interested, though the Anfield side is downplaying reports of an official offer.

Spanish giants Atlético Madrid are also believed to be leading the race, with journalist Rubén Uría reporting that De Bruyne has agreed a five-year deal in principle with the La Liga club. Atlético, currently third in Spain’s top flight, can offer Champions League football — an appealing prospect for the midfielder.

City reportedly value De Bruyne at around £58m, while Transfermarkt estimates his worth at €55m (£46.7m). Napoli are also monitoring the situation and are hoping De Bruyne’s close friendship with Romelu Lukaku could sway him toward Serie A. Meanwhile, MLS clubs and Aston Villa are also keeping tabs.

Formal negotiations between Atlético Madrid and Manchester City are expected to begin after City’s Premier League campaign concludes.
