Last-minute Fernandes penalty seals United win

Manchester United finally got their first win of the 2025/26 season with a dramatic 97th-minute penalty from Bruno Fernandes, beating Burnley 3-2. It was only their fourth Premier League win in their last 14 home games at Old Trafford.

This win was much-needed after a shocking midweek defeat to League Two side Grimsby Town and growing rumours about manager Ruben Amorim’s future.

United started strongly, with goalkeeper Martin Dubravka making several early saves to keep out efforts from Leny Yoro, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. Mbeumo missed a good chance soon after, and United were frustrated when a penalty for a foul on Mason Mount by Kyle Walker was overturned by VAR after a long delay.

United finally broke the deadlock in the 27th minute in lucky fashion. Casemiro headed Fernandes’ free-kick onto the bar, and the rebound hit Burnley’s Josh Cullen before crossing the line.

Burnley had a chance when Cunha went off injured, but ex-United player Hannibal Mejbri fired over. United continued to press, with Mount hitting the bar and Amad forcing a great save from Dubravka.

Burnley were lucky to be only one goal down at half-time, especially after Amad missed a big chance just before the break.

After the restart, Burnley improved and got level through Lyle Foster, who scored his first league goal since April 2024 after a cross from Jacob Bruun Larsen.

But United hit back almost immediately. Zirkzee set up Dalot, who squared it to Mbeumo to score his second goal in two games. Mbeumo also became the first United player to score in the league this season.

Burnley had a goal ruled out shortly after, and Fernandes went close with a volley. Burnley then equalised again after a long throw led to a scramble, and Jaidon Anthony scored from close range.

United pushed for a winner, and although Benjamin Sesko missed two great chances, they finally got a penalty after Anthony fouled Amad in the box. Fernandes stepped up and calmly found the bottom corner, making up for his missed penalty against Fulham last week.
