Arsenal suffer costly home defeat against West Ham as Lewis-Skelly sees red

Arsenal’s 15-game unbeaten home run in the Premier League came to an abrupt end as West Ham United secured a 1-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium, dealing a major blow to the Gunners’ title ambitions. The result marked West Ham’s second successive league win at Arsenal’s ground and could prove decisive in the title race, especially with Liverpool set to play Manchester City.

Arsenal entered the match knowing that Liverpool’s midweek draw had provided an opportunity to close the gap at the top. However, a sluggish first-half performance saw them struggle to create chances, lacking the intensity and creativity expected of a side chasing silverware.

Their best opportunity fell to Riccardo Calafiori, but his tame effort from the edge of the box was comfortably gathered by Alphonse Areola, leaving Arsenal without a clear-cut opening before the break.

West Ham, meanwhile, posed a greater attacking threat. Tomas Soucek sent a couple of headers wide, while Jarrod Bowen narrowly missed the target from an Aaron Wan-Bissaka cut-back.

Bowen, however, made no mistake just before half-time. Wan-Bissaka delivered a precise cross, and Bowen met it with a diving header, silencing the Emirates as West Ham took a shock lead into the interval.

The visitors could have doubled their advantage early in the second half, as Bowen almost connected with a dangerous low cross, narrowly missing his second goal of the night.

Sensing the urgency, Mikel Arteta made early substitutions, with Leandro Trossard injecting some life into Arsenal’s attack. The Belgian came closest to an equaliser, but his reverse shot was denied by Areola’s outstretched leg, keeping West Ham in front.

Arsenal’s night went from bad to worse in the 70th minute when substitute Myles Lewis-Skelly was sent off. The youngster, whose previous red card against Wolves had been overturned, brought down Mohammed Kudus on the halfway line as the last man, initially receiving a yellow card. However, after a VAR review, the challenge was upgraded to a straight red, leaving Arsenal with ten men for the remainder of the match.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Arsenal pushed forward in search of an equaliser but failed to show enough quality to break down a disciplined West Ham defence.

For Graham Potter’s side, the victory was a hard-earned second away win in eight matches, offering a much-needed boost as they look to climb the table.

Arsenal’s title hopes now hang in the balance. Although they remain eight points behind Liverpool, that gap could extend to 11 should Liverpool triumph at the Etihad Stadium tomorrow—a margin that might prove insurmountable in the race for the Premier League crown.
