Anthony Gordon, the star player of Newcastle United, has been informed that he would be considered as the “fourth option” at Liverpool if he chose to join the Premier League giants.
The talented England international was a standout performer in the previous Premier League season, scoring eleven goals and providing ten assists in 35 appearances for Newcastle. The Magpies faced financial constraints due to the Profit and Sustainability rules, leading to speculations about the possible sale of key players such as Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes, or Alexander Isak. However, the club managed to retain their crucial trio and only sold Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to Brighton and Nottingham Forest respectively.
Prior to these two departures, there were rumours of Gordon’s potential move to Liverpool, with talks of a swap deal involving Joe Gomez and even reports of a medical being booked. It is no secret that Liverpool is a big admirer of Gordon, who himself was a childhood fan of the Reds, but the deal could not materialize in the summer. Newcastle has now begun negotiations with Gordon for a contract extension, stating that the club is willing to offer him a better salary.
The report also mentions that Newcastle is determined to keep hold of their key players after the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability deadline has passed. With two years remaining on his current contract, Gordon is expected to receive a significant pay rise by signing an extension.
According to the latest update by Fabrizio Romano on Friday morning, Newcastle is making good progress in the contract talks with Gordon and is optimistic about reaching an agreement, despite a few details still to be sorted out. The club has rejected approaches from other clubs, including Liverpool, back in June.
