Flamengo produced a stirring second-half comeback to defeat Chelsea 3-1 in Philadelphia and secure their place in the knockout stages of the FIFA Club World Cup. The Brazilian champions overturned an early deficit in front of a passionate crowd dominated by their supporters to hand the Premier League side their first defeat of the tournament.
Chelsea struck first through Pedro Neto, who capitalised on an early opportunity to put the Blues ahead. Despite the lead, the Londoners struggled to control the match as Flamengo dictated possession and tempo, roared on by the majority of the 54,000 fans at Lincoln Financial Field.
The second half brought a shift in momentum. Filipe Luis introduced Bruno Henrique from the bench in the 56th minute, and the move paid immediate dividends. The forward made an instant impact by firing in the equaliser just moments after coming on. He then turned provider, delivering a precise ball to former Real Madrid and Manchester City defender Danilo, who slotted home to give Flamengo a deserved 2-1 advantage.
Chelsea’s task became even more difficult when substitute Nicolas Jackson was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Ayrton Lucas in the 68th minute. Reduced to ten men and visibly shaken, the English side were unable to recover.
Wallace Yan sealed Flamengo’s impressive comeback with a third goal late on, putting the result beyond doubt and sending the travelling Brazilian supporters into celebration.
“It was a special day for me and our club,” said Flamengo head coach Filipe Luis after the final whistle. “We knew we would have chances against Chelsea, because we have one way to play and they know how to follow that path.”
Flamengo’s qualification for the round of 16 was confirmed later in the evening when Esperance of Tunisia edged out Los Angeles FC 1-0 in Nashville. With two wins from two in Group D, Flamengo now head into the knockouts as one of the in-form teams of the competition.
