Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid have sealed their places in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup following two intense and contrasting victories over Manchester City and Juventus, respectively.
Borussia Dortmund booked their place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Mexican side Monterrey — a match that was effectively decided in the first half thanks to a clinical performance by Serhou Guirassy.
The German side came out strong from the start, showing their intent with sharp passing and aggressive pressing. It didn’t take long for them to make their mark on the game. In the 14th minute, Guirassy opened the scoring with a well-taken goal that left the Monterrey defence flat-footed. Just ten minutes later, the Dortmund striker struck again, doubling the lead and putting his team firmly in control.
Despite going two goals down early on, Monterrey refused to give in. They regrouped at the break and came out in the second half with renewed energy. Their efforts paid off shortly after the restart when German Berterame found the net, cutting the deficit and bringing the match back to life.
The remainder of the game saw Monterrey apply considerable pressure as they pushed for an equaliser, creating several chances and forcing Dortmund to defend deep. However, the Bundesliga side remained compact and disciplined, successfully absorbing the pressure and managing the final stages of the match with composure.
In the end, Dortmund’s early advantage and defensive resilience proved decisive, allowing them to clinch the win and progress to the next round of the competition. Guirassy’s first-half brace was the difference, earning him man of the match honours and ensuring that Dortmund’s journey in the tournament continues.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid took a more measured route to the last eight, edging Juventus 1-0 in a tightly contested encounter. After a cautious and goalless first half, it was Gonzalo Garcia who emerged as the difference-maker, slotting past Michele de Gregorio in the 54th minute. The goal proved enough for Xabi Alonso’s side, who managed the remainder of the match with composure and control to secure their progression.
With these results, the quarter-final lineup for the FIFA Club World Cup is now officially complete. Friday’s fixture will see Brazilian side Fluminense clash with Al Hilal in what promises to be a battle of styles and stamina. On Saturday, Palmeiras take on Chelsea in a South America vs Europe showdown.
Elsewhere, a marquee clash awaits as Paris Saint-Germain face Bayern Munich—two European giants with high expectations. Rounding off the quarter-finals, Real Madrid will meet Borussia Dortmund in another heavyweight encounter, as both sides look to move closer to global glory.
