Barcelona fans have reason to be hopeful as star striker Robert Lewandowski suggests he could return from an ankle injury in time for the highly anticipated El Clasico against Real Madrid at the end of the month.
The Poland international had been sidelined since sustaining the injury during the Champions League match against Porto on October 4. Initial reports hinted at a longer absence, possibly until mid-November. However, Lewandowski’s recovery has shown significant progress in recent days, and there are growing expectations of his return on October 28.
Speaking about his recovery, the 35-year-old underlined his commitment to returning only when he’s fully fit, saying, “It all depends on how the leg reacts. If I’m not fit, I won’t force myself to play.”
Lewandowski has been in excellent form for Barcelona during the 2023-24 season, amassing six goals and four assists in 10 appearances across all competitions. His absence has left a void in the team, with coach Xavi acknowledging that he’s the “reference point in attack” and a significant leader.
While Barcelona eagerly awaits Lewandowski’s possible return, they are also hopeful that Pedri and Alejandro Balde could be back from their respective injuries. Lamine Yamal and Raphinha might also rejoin the squad, but Jules Kounde and Frenkie de Jong are expected to remain sidelined for the upcoming El Clasico match.
Barcelona will face Athletic Bilbao in La Liga before hosting Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League in preparation for their clash with Real Madrid. The potential return of Lewandowski has certainly added an extra layer of excitement to this already heated rivalry.
