Norbert Attard won the men’s singles category in the International Darts Open held this weekend after beating the Swiss Thomas Junghans 5-2 in the final.
It was an impeccable performance by the experienced Maltese player who never gave Junghans any chance to enter the game. The same Attard to some extent wrote a new page in the history of local darts after it had been 21 years since a Maltese won this tournament that is held every year in our country.
Attard had a long journey until he reached the final victory after victories against Daniel Bauerdick (4-1), Colin Littlecot (4-0), Vassallis Andreanidis (4-1), Stephan Cobau (4-0), Albert Scerri (4- 3), Marcus Maier (4-1) and Andrew Davidson (4-1).
During these three days there were several categories as in the women’s Open, it was the Dutch Lerena Lietbergen who won German Lisa Zollikofer 5-2.
In the men’s doubles there was the victory of the Scots Andy Davidson and Owen Whiteside against Belgians Sven Slock and Alain Van Spitael 4-2.
In this competition, the Maltese who advanced the most were Jonathan and Noel Bilocca as well as Omar and Kevin Aquilina who were eliminated in the quarter finals.
In the women’s doubles, Lisa and Lena Zollikofer from Germany beat Laura and Nece Turner from England 4-1. Josianne Caruana and Marconia Zammit Borg was the most Maltese couple to advance to the quarter finals.
In the men’s singles, the victory went to the Scotsman Andrew Davidson who in the final beat Darren Johnson from England 5-2. Norbert Attard was the player that advanced mostly when he reached the last 16 but lost against the English Maryn Turner 4-2.
In the women’s singles, Dutch Kimm Palstra won 5-2 against the German Lisa Zollikofer 5-2. It was the Maltese duo Marconia Zammit Borg who advanced in the last 32 phase.
In the Open Youth Dutch Milan Brinkman beat Belgian Luca Hessens 5-1. Meanwhile young Thomas Sammut who even reached the semi-finals and was unlucky not to qualify after a 4-3 loss against the eventual winner Brinkman.
In the Standing Para Darts,Englishman Jonathan Hirst beat his compatriot Michael Austin 4-2.
Finally in the Wheelchair Paradarts, Maltese player Bradley Zerafa reached the final of this competition although he was defeated by the English Darren Kennish 4-0.
