Mainz continued their impressive Bundesliga campaign with a 3-1 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday, propelling them to third place and bolstering their aspirations for a Champions League spot.
The match commenced cautiously, with both teams exhibiting a lack of risk-taking. The first notable opportunity arose in the 26th minute when Gladbach’s national striker, Tim Kleindienst, directed a header onto the crossbar.
Mainz seized the lead in the 39th minute through Paul Nebel, who concluded a swift counter-attack initiated by Johnathan Burkardt and Jae-sung Lee.
Shortly before half-time, tensions escalated between Mainz’s Dominik Kohr and Gladbach’s Kevin Stöger, with Kohr appearing to strike out and shove his opponent. However, the referee opted to whistle for half-time without further action, a decision that remained unaltered by the video assistant referee.
Mainz doubled their advantage in the 49th minute when Kohr capitalised on a rebound following a free-kick delivery.
Gladbach reduced the deficit in the 73rd minute as Stefan Lainer found the net after Mainz’s goalkeeper, Robin Zentner, failed to effectively clear a cross.
However, Mainz restored their two-goal cushion just four minutes later when Nadiem Amiri struck decisively, extinguishing Gladbach’s hopes of a comeback.
This result extends Mainz’s unbeaten run against Mönchengladbach to nine league matches and keeps them on course for their best-ever Bundesliga finish, surpassing their fifth-place achievement in 2012.
