Mireya Bugeja and Isaac Bonnici etched their names into the record books by setting new national youth records at the University Games, currently taking place in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany.
Bugeja delivered a standout performance in the 1,500 metres, clocking an impressive time of 4:26.85. Competing against a strong international field, the young Maltese athlete secured 11th place, holding her own among elite competitors.
Her time shaved 0.20 seconds off her previous personal best, which she had set during the Challenge 1 meet at the Matthew Micallef St John Stadium in Marsa—marking another step forward in her promising athletic career.
Bugeja’s timing set a new national record in the U-20 and U-23 categories.
On the other hand, Isaac Bonnici was in action in the 800 metres heat.
Bonnici was in action in the second heat and completed the two-lap race in a time of one minute 52.03 seconds to finish seventh in the race.
Bonnici’s effort saw him lower his national record in the U-20 and U-23 categories by 0.38 seconds.
The Rush Athletics Club runner had set the previous best last March when stopping the clock in one minute 52.41 seconds.
