Danish tennis player Holger Rune emphasizes the need for the younger generation to step up and defeat Novak Djokovic more consistently. Despite some breakthrough victories by Holger and other emerging players, Djokovic dominated the tennis scene last season, clinching three Grand Slam titles and the Final Masters.
“We have to make a step forward, to beat him more regularly, not just once. I beat him, Siner beat him, but still Novak won three out of four Slams, and almost Wimbledon. We are not at his level yet; we have to do our best to displace him,” acknowledged Rune.
While Rune has experienced success against Djokovic, including a notable encounter in the group stage of the Final Masters, Djokovic’s overall dominance remains evident, particularly in major tournaments.
Reflecting on their matchups, Rune noted, “I never beat him at the Slam. Nothing is impossible, but it is more difficult here – he feels more comfortable at slams, plays to three sets won, and has many years of experience. He knows he can come back even if he’s down 2-0 in sets. I think that more players believe that they can beat him in two sets, but at Slams, a smaller number of players believe in that.”
As Djokovic continues to hold the top spot in the world rankings, Rune, currently ranked eighth globally, recognizes the challenge but remains determined to elevate his game.
