The Paris 2024 Olympic Games, once expected to be a standout event, have been mired in controversy due to the poor quality of the medals awarded to athletes. Many have noted rust stains, wear, and a dull appearance that resemble relics from the 1924 Paris Games, the last time Paris hosted the Olympics. The poor condition of the medals has sparked disappointment, particularly in France, where national pride is tied to the Games.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has since confirmed it will replace the faulty medals. Over 100 athletes have already returned their medals for repair or replacement, prompting the Paris Mint to investigate the cause of the damage. The issue dates back to last summer, when athletes first reported their medals deteriorating, especially bronze ones. British diver Yasmin Harper and American skater Nyjah Huston were among the first to highlight the tarnishing.
The medals were designed by Parisian jewellers Chaumet, featuring a piece of steel from the Eiffel Tower. However, the use of recycled materials, including electronic waste, is now under scrutiny, as the premature wear could be linked to the quality of the recycled metals. The Paris Mint had to change the varnishing process due to a European directive, which may have led to the deterioration.

While the IOC has promised to replace the damaged medals, the controversy continues to hurt the Games’ reputation. Athletes and sponsors are dissatisfied, and many believe the poor-quality medals do not reflect the hard work of the athletes. The crisis has also led to the resignation of several officials at the Paris Mint.
As the IOC faces increased pressure to resolve the issue, the Paris 2024 scandal highlights the importance of quality in Olympic awards, with many athletes questioning whether modern efforts for sustainability have compromised the durability of their medals.
