The victory not only avenged their 2022 loss to the Chiefs but also prevented Andy Reid’s side from completing a historic third consecutive title win.
Led by quarterback Jalen Hurts, who was instrumental throughout, the Eagles delivered a commanding performance on both sides of the ball. The game began with an evenly matched opening quarter, but Philadelphia capitalised on their first real opportunity when Hurts powered through a pile-up to score a 1-yard touchdown, giving the Eagles an early lead. The first quarter ended 7-0, with the Chiefs struggling to find any rhythm as Patrick Mahomes came under pressure.
In the second quarter, Philadelphia extended their lead when kicker Jake Elliott nailed a 48-yard field goal, putting the Eagles up 10-0. Things soon unravelled for Kansas City, as Mahomes, who had gone over 200 passes without an interception, saw his streak end dramatically. Another costly mistake from Mahomes resulted in a second interception, allowing A.J. Brown to score another touchdown before halftime. Elliott’s successful conversion made it 24-0 as the teams headed into the break.
After the interval, Kansas City’s struggles continued. Mahomes, under constant pressure from the Eagles’ relentless defence, was repeatedly forced to scramble behind the line of scrimmage. Philadelphia, meanwhile, played with clinical efficiency. Saquon Barkley and Hurts kept the chains moving, while another Elliott field goal extended the lead to 27-0. DeVonta Smith then caught a perfectly placed pass to secure another touchdown, pushing the score to 34-0.
Kansas City finally responded late in the third quarter, with Mahomes leading a drive that resulted in a touchdown pass to rookie receiver Xavier Worthy, reducing the deficit to 34-6. However, any hope of a dramatic comeback was quickly quashed as the Eagles added yet another field goal early in the fourth quarter, courtesy of Elliott’s impeccable kicking. The Chiefs’ woes continued as Mahomes fumbled a pass under pressure, handing possession back to Philadelphia. Elliott capitalised with a 50-yard field goal, bringing the score to 40-6.
Despite late touchdowns from DeAndre Hopkins and Worthy, the Chiefs’ response came too late to alter the outcome. The Eagles, having controlled the game from the outset, comfortably ran down the clock and began their celebrations.
With Hurts at the helm and a well-balanced offensive and defensive display, Philadelphia secured a landmark victory that will be remembered as one of the most dominant Super Bowl performances in recent years. For the Chiefs, it was a sobering end to their quest for a third consecutive title, while the Eagles’ triumph marks a fitting redemption after their defeat just three seasons ago.
