Good performances from Maltese wrestlers in Sassari

At the end of last week the Maltese Wrestling Federation took part in two international tournaments in Sassari, Sardinia. One of these tournaments was Olympic Wrestling, while the other was Beach Wrestling, organised by UWW.

In the 57kg category, Gary Giordimaina was very close for the bronze medal. In the first match he lost against an Ivorian Olympic wrestler who will take part in the upcoming Olympics in Paris. In the second match he lost against Darian Cruz of Puerto Rico, who will also take part in the Olympics. In his third match he won against the Italian Carmine Caiazza, by which victory he passed for the Bronze medal match. He wrestled against a Costa Rican wrestler. He started out good as he was even in an advantage of 6-2, but ended up losing and finishing in fourth place.

In the 74kg category Nico Zarb also had good matches considering who he was competing with, as there were also athletes who will go to the Olympics. He lost both his matches and failed to qualify from the group stage.

In the 92kg category Cedric Zarb was his first experience in this category as he went down one category. He still did good considering he rarely had competitions of this level.

On Sunday, Malta took in the Beach Wrestling competition. The wrestlers were Nico Zarb at 80kg and Cedric Zarb at 90kg. The Moldova team dominated this competition, but the win that Nico Zarb against the Italian Pazzona, Malta finished third place from six countries.

Jesmond Giordimaina was the coach of both competitions, Abraham Vassallo was referee in both competitions.
