Xavier Rizzo and Adam Pace for the European Junior Snooker Championship

Xavier Rizzo and Adam Pace left Malta today for Sarajevo in Bosnia-Herzegovina to take part in the European Junior Snooker Championship which will start tomorrow. Both will compete in two catergories, the under 16 and under 18.

Xavier Rizzo is 15 years old and last season won the national championship in under 16 and under 18 categories while Adam Pace who is still 9 years old during the last two consecutive years was the winner in the under 12 category.

Adam Pace during these European Championships will be the second youngest participant after Aleksejs Grigoļunovičs of Latvia who is just 8 years old.

In the under-16 category, 61 players from 20 different countries are engaged, while in the under-18 category, 75 players from 22 countries will take part. A total of 48 players who will participate in both categories and apart from these categories, later in week, the under-21 category will be held.

Rizzo in the under-16 category will be in Group D together with Riley Powell (Wales), Max Kennedy (Ireland) and Aleksejs Grigoļunovičs (Latvia) while in the under-18 category he will play in Group Q against Matvei Lagodzinschii (Ukraine), Ayaan Iqbal (Scotland) and Lennart Tomei (Germany).

Pace in the under-16 category was drawn in Group N and has to face Vladislav Gradinari (Moldova), Witold Bystrzycki (Poland) and Will Taylor (Northern Ireland). In the under-18 category his opponents will be Artem Surzhykov (Ukraine), Oliwier Niziałek (Poland) and Tadija Matijasevic (Serbia) who will play in Group H.

For the Malta and Billiards Snooker Association, the main objective for the participation of the Maltese children and youngsters abroad is to start gaining international snooker experience, competing against players from different European countries. Many of whom have already established themselves in these type of championships. In fact a lot of them were in Malta during last year’s European Junior Championship organized in our country.

The two Maltese yougsters are accompanied by the Malta Billiards and Snooker Association Finance Director, Christopher Pace.
