Judd Trump Begins German Masters Title Defense with Victory

Reigning champion Judd Trump kicked off his 2025 German Masters campaign with a 5-2 win over David Grace in the opening round, setting up a second-round clash with Joe O’Connor. Meanwhile, Shaun Murphy, fresh off his Masters triumph earlier this month, continued his fine form with a dominant 5-0 victory over Liam Graham, booking a meeting with Thepchaiya Un-Nooh, who also secured an impressive 5-0 win against Stuart Bingham.

The opening day of the German Masters in Berlin saw thrilling action, with top players showcasing their skills and determination. Trump, the three-time German Masters champion, faced an early scare as he lost two of the first three frames against Grace. However, the world No. 1 rallied back, grinding through a series of lengthy, tactical frames before sealing the win with a break of 73.

Trump, who claimed the title last year by defeating China’s Si Jiahui 10-5 in the final, will now face Joe O’Connor on Wednesday. O’Connor advanced comfortably with a 5-1 victory over Stephen Maguire.

Shaun Murphy, playing his first match since his Masters victory just eight days ago, delivered a flawless performance against Liam Graham. The 5-0 whitewash sets up an intriguing second-round clash with Thepchaiya Un-Nooh, who was equally dominant in his 5-0 thrashing of Stuart Bingham.

Reflecting on his win, Murphy said, “I’ve had just a couple of days off this week and really enjoyed the victory. Those Triple Crown wins don’t come around every year. However, I’ve just had a couple of days then straight back to work and put the hours in. I didn’t want to come here, after the Lord Mayor’s Show, to this venue that I love so much and lose. I’m delighted with the victory, and now we march on.”
