Arthur Cachia bows out as Teams’ Seniors Championship gets underway

Arthur Cachia, Malta’s last remaining player in the European Snooker Championship Seniors individual event, exited at the quarter finals on Tuesday after a 4-1 defeat to Wales’ Darren Morgan. The vastly experienced Morgan, a multiple E.B.S.A. The European Seniors champion, who enjoyed more than two decades on the professional tour, started as a clear favourite and proved too strong for the Maltese veteran.

Attention now turns to the Teams’ Seniors Championship, which began on Tuesday with all three Maltese sides in action on the first of three days allocated to the category.

Malta 1: Alex Borg and Arthur Cachia opened with a narrow 3-2 loss to Albania’s Edlir Kurthysa and Mohamed Elaboody, before responding emphatically with a 3-0 victory over Finland 2 (Pertti Salo and Tero Nappari).

Malta 2: Philip Ciantar and Frans Mintoff played one match and won it 3-1 against Ireland 2 (Tom Gleeson and Mark Walsh), keeping themselves well placed in the group.

Malta 3: Tony Mifsud and Ivan Attard suffered two defeats, 1-3 to Finland 1 (Jukka Haapakoski and Kari Keinänen) and 0-3 to England 2 (Mark Joyce and Wayne Brown). Although eliminated, Malta 3 will contest their final fixture for third place in Group E.

Wednesday’s schedule features the completion of the group stage, along with the last 16 ties and the quarter finals. With solid early results, Team Malta 1 (Borg and Cachia) and Team Malta 2 (Ciantar and Mintoff) both remain well-positioned to progress to the last 16.
