St Etienne relegated, Reims to play relegation play off on final day drama

Paris Saint-Germain wrapped up their Ligue 1 campaign with a 3-1 comeback win over Auxerre, thanks to a second-half brace from Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Despite having clinched the title back in early April, the champions ensured a strong finish to their season, ending on 84 points — a commanding 19 points ahead of second-placed Marseille.

Auxerre took a surprise lead through Lassine Sinayoko in the first half, putting PSG on the back foot. However, Kvaratskhelia equalized just before the hour mark, bundling home from close range to bring the visitors level. Captain Marquinhos then headed PSG into the lead, and Kvaratskhelia sealed the victory with a late goal, cutting inside and finishing clinically to cap off a spirited comeback.

While PSG’s title was never in doubt, the final day of the Ligue 1 season delivered plenty of drama elsewhere — especially in the fight for European places and survival.

Relegation Battle:
St Etienne’s 3-2 home defeat to Toulouse confirmed their drop into Ligue 2, joining already-relegated Montpellier. In a nail-biting finish, Le Havre secured top-flight safety with a 3-2 win at Strasbourg thanks to a stoppage-time penalty. That victory propelled them to 15th place, sending Reims — who lost 2-1 to Lille — into the relegation/promotion playoff against FC Metz.

FC Metz, having earlier edged Dunkerque with a bizarre stoppage-time own goal, will now have a shot at promotion back to Ligue 1.

European Spots:
Marseille and Monaco finished second and third, respectively, securing Champions League group stage places. OGC Nice hammered Brest 6-0 to grab fourth and a place in the Champions League third qualifying round.

Lille’s win over Reims not only secured fifth place and a Europa League berth, but it also influenced the fate of Lyon, who defeated Angers 2-0. With Strasbourg’s loss, Lyon climbed to sixth on goal difference, earning a spot in the Europa Conference League.

However, Strasbourg may still qualify for European competition if PSG win next weekend’s French Cup final against Reims.

Final Standings (Top 6):

  1. Paris Saint-Germain – 84 pts
  2. Marseille – 65 pts
  3. Monaco – 61 pts
  4. Nice – 60 pts
  5. Lille – 58 pts
  6. Lyon – 56 pts

The season closes with PSG crowned kings once again, but it’s the final-day twists — from last-gasp goals to playoff-deciding penalties — that defined the most dramatic end to a Ligue 1 season in recent memory.
