Marseille claimed their first win in the last ten editions of Le Classique and stretched their Ligue 1 home streak to seven straight victories with a 1–0 triumph over Paris Saint-Germain, ending the French and European champions’ perfect start to the season in a rescheduled clash played a day late after adverse weather.
The hosts struck inside four minutes. Mason Greenwood’s corner was not fully cleared and, after the ball was recycled to the far post, a deflection off Willian Pacho allowed Nayef Aguerd to nod beyond Lucas Chevalier, who will feel he should have done better.
Roared on by a deafening crowd, Marseille rode out a spell of PSG pressure. Vitinha drew a firm save from Geronimo Rulli midway through the first period, but the clearer chances fell to Roberto De Zerbi’s side. Amine Gouiri rattled the crossbar on a swift break and Emerson Palmieri had a finish ruled out for offside in the build up, before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia curled wide at the other end.
After the interval PSG monopolised the ball without prising open a compact Marseille. Rulli tipped Achraf Hakimi’s low drive behind and another effort from Vitinha whistled through traffic, but Luis Enrique’s men were largely limited to shots from distance.
With Bradley Barcola, Desire Doue, Joao Neves and Ousmane Dembele all injured, Enrique turned to Lee Kang in and teenager Senny Mayulu to chase an equaliser. Instead, Marseille should have sealed it when Greenwood overran the ball after being slipped through by Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, who then saw a penalty appeal waved away and was denied by Chevalier in stoppage time.
The closing stages were fiery. De Zerbi was sent off for protests at referee Jerome Brisard, yet Marseille held firm to climb to sixth. For PSG, whose head coach was named men’s coach of the year at the Ballon d’Or ceremony on the night, it was a first domestic setback of the campaign and a reminder that the league leaders can be made to look ordinary inside a charged Velodrome.
