Napoli and Bologna face off in historic Supercoppa Italiana final in Riyadh

Napoli and Bologna will contest an unprecedented Supercoppa Italiana final on Saturday evening, with Saudi Arabia providing the backdrop for a clash rich in narrative and significance.

The winners of last season’s Serie A title take on the Coppa Italia holders at the King Saud University Stadium in Riyadh, with kick-off scheduled for 20:00 Italian time.

It is a meeting of two clubs at different points in their respective journeys. Napoli arrive as favourites, aiming to lift the Supercoppa for a third time, while Bologna are bidding to win the trophy for the first time in their history, continuing a remarkable rise under head coach Vincenzo Italiano.

For Napoli, this final represents an opportunity to reaffirm their domestic dominance after securing the Scudetto only a few months ago. However, Antonio Conte’s side travel to Riyadh depleted by a number of key absences, which could complicate their plans.

Goalkeeper Alex Meret, midfielders Kevin De Bruyne, Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa and Billy Gilmour are all unavailable, while defender Sam Beukema is sidelined with a foot injury. Matias Olivera remains a doubt. Despite the absentees, Conte is expected to persist with the 3-4-3 system introduced following Napoli’s recent league defeat to Bologna.

Spinazzola could feature on the left flank, with Matteo Politano on the opposite side and Scott McTominay anchoring midfield. Eljif Elmas is likely to operate in attack alongside David Neres, while Juan Jesus is set to return to the back line alongside Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Amir Rrahmani.

Bologna, meanwhile, continues to defy expectations. Fresh from eliminating Inter in the semi-finals, the Rossoblù arrive in Riyadh buoyed by confidence and with nothing to lose. Italiano’s side are contesting the Supercoppa for the first time, adding another milestone to a campaign that already delivered Coppa Italia glory.

The Emilia Romagna club will be without Federico Bernardeschi, who suffered a fractured collarbone, but Italiano is expected to reshuffle his attack, with Cambiaghi, Orsolini and Odgaard supporting striker Santiago Castro. In midfield, Moro is favoured to partner Pobega, while Holm and Miranda are set to operate as wing-backs.

History offers an intriguing contrast. Napoli have lifted the Supercoppa on just two occasions from six finals, in 1990 under Diego Maradona and in 2014 with Walter Mazzarri. Conte himself has won three finals from eight attempts as a coach. Bologna, by contrast, have won both of their previous one-off finals in domestic competitions and are unbeaten against Napoli in their last five meetings.

With Milan and Inter already eliminated, this final guarantees a new chapter in Supercoppa history. Whether it ends with Bologna’s fairytale continuing or Napoli asserting their status as Italy’s reigning champions will be decided under the lights of Riyadh.
