Red Bull driver Max Verstappen won the Formula 1 title. He overtook Hamilton in the last lap and won the first title of his career.
It could be said that he reached the title at the last second.
Due to the strange decisions of the organizers, Verstappen ended up ahead of a big rival.
He finished the season with 395.5 points, eight more than Hamilton, who was on a safe path to his eighth title.
It all started when Nicholas Latifi hit a wall.
The controversial decision of the race directorate to send a safety vehicle to the track without interrupting the race followed.
After that, it was decided not to return the drivers who had a lag behind, so that it would be annulled before the last lap, in which Verstappen managed to overtake the seven-time world champion and win the title.
Thus, Verstappen broke the dominance of Mercedes in the era of Formula 1, which lasted from 2014 to 2016, and also became the first Dutch champion.
He brought Honda its first title since 1991, when Ayrton Senna took the throne.
At the very start of the race, Hamilton outwitted Max and overtook him in the first corner, so the Dutch driver immediately tried to fight back.
He did that with contact, after which the driver of the Mercedes left the track, but he managed to stay in the lead.
The period of the virtual safety vehicle, when Antonio Giovinazzi stopped on the track, went to the advantage of Max, who used it to go to the box and slowly catch up with Hamilton, but it seemed that he would run out of time.
However, due to the already mentioned incident, the young Dutchman still had the opportunity to challenge Hamilton in the last round and overthrow him from the throne with a great overtake.
